Kale

Kale

Kale provides good cover throughout the season and is a reliable crop for showing pheasants. Kale is able to grow in most situations, but the variety chosen should have good winger hardiness. If left kale will often produce good regrowth in the second year.

For 2005 watch out for ULTRASTRIKE !! Ultrastrike provides very effective protection against insect pest attack and has been used succesfully to protect kale crops in New Zealsnd against flea beetle. Ultrastride contains a systemic insecticide and two contact fungicides to control the seedling diseases Pythium and Fusarium, as well as ‘wirestem’ (Rhizoctonia solani). It also contains molybdenum - an essential trace element for general brassica growth - and a bird repellent to deter bird feeding. This is particularly important in broadcast situations.

Bittern is an excellent game cover crop and can still be grazed by livestock after the end of the shooting season. It is also popular with the environmentalists int he second season because it will provide a food source for a range of songbird species that can last well into the winter. Bittern will be available with ULTRASTRIKE.

Caledonian ~ can provide excellent full season cover from September ~ February and has proved to be very winter hardy. Caledonians club root resistance now enables growers to sow continuous kale on prime cover sites.

Maris Kestrel ~ another good dual purpose variety has a high leaf to stem ratio providing a good canopy combined with good winter hardiness. Maris Kestrel will be available with ULTRASTRIKE.
